Find an InstallerUnderstanding Screen Sizes and Aspect Ratios
Screen size is almost always measured diagonally — from one corner to the opposite corner. But knowing the diagonal alone doesn't tell you the width and height. Those depend on the aspect ratio: the proportional relationship between width and height. A 65" TV in 16:9 has different dimensions than a 65" ultrawide in 21:9.
The most common aspect ratio for TVs and monitors is 16:9 (widescreen). Movie screens often use 2.35:1 or 2.39:1 (CinemaScope). Older content and some presentations use 4:3. Ultrawide monitors typically use 21:9. This calculator handles all of them, plus any custom ratio you need.
Once you know your screen dimensions, use our TV Size Calculator to find the right size for your viewing distance, or our Projector Throw Calculator to plan your projector placement.
