What shape is your room?

Most rooms are rectangular. If yours is L-shaped or open, just estimate the main viewing area.

Planning Your Home Theater Layout

Speaker placement is one of the most overlooked parts of setting up a home theater, but it makes a huge difference. Even great speakers will sound mediocre if they're in the wrong spot. The good news is that getting it right is mostly about geometry — and that's what this tool helps you with.

For a 5.1 setup, the front left and right speakers should be at 22–30 degrees from center. Surround speakers go at 90–110 degrees to your sides. The center channel sits directly above or below the TV. And the subwoofer works best in a front corner or along a front wall.

Seating distance matters too — sit too close and you'll see pixels, too far and you lose the immersive effect. Use our TV Size Guide to find the right screen size for your seating distance.
